How To Choose The Right Dining Furniture

Dining spaces play a crucial role in keeping the family ties strong. Statistics show that families that eat together stay together. By picking the right kind of dining set you can create a warm and cozy space for your family to bond.  A dining room is more than a place to eat; it is a place to nourish your soul along with your body. The dining table is the focal point of the dining room. The dining table can double up as a study table or a game table as per your need.

The choice of the material can have a major impact on the durability of the table. It is not uncommon that sturdy, hard wood dining tables have lasted over generations. Oak, maple, walnut, teak and mahogany are some of the hot picks if you want a hard wood table. Some of the new entrants in the dining table arena include tables made of composite wood like plywood and fiber board. These options may be lighter on your wallet but are not as durable as the hardwood tables. Tables made of medium density fiberboard (MDF) can be used if you are not planning to hang on to it for a long time and may be a viable option if you use the dining table only occasionally. Glass, marble and slate are some of the other materials for your dining table. If you are looking for options where you can clean the table easily then a marble or slate table may work for you better than a polished wooden table. If you set your heart on a wooden table but know that spills are inevitable because of the small children in the family then you can go for a wooden table with a natural finish that ages well as it develops the patina. If you want to pick a table that is out of the ordinary then you can order a table made of rattan, steel or iron. Tables made with plastic and those that use a combination of two different materials  are creating ripples in the interior designing field.

When choosing a dining table you have to take into consideration the shape, size and dimensions of the table as well as the dining room. You have to make sure that there is enough space for comfortable movement around the table. It is a good idea to leave atleast 19.5 cms of space between the table and the walls so that the diners can sit down and get up easily without any hindrance. Placing too many chairs around the table also will make the whole place look crammed rather than comfortable. Keep in mind that each person will need about 2 feet of space for them to be comfortable and to avoid bumping into each other. You can pull in additional chairs during the holiday season when you have more guests to entertain.

A round table is ideal for small areas. If you pick a round pedestal table then you can accommodate more people as there is more leg room. A pedestal table does not have any legs and is only supported by a pedestal in the middle so it leaves more space to stretch your legs. A rectangular table will be suitable for a long and narrow room. If you plan on having a large group at the table then it is better to go with the rectangular table. In such a scenario a large round table may not work as it will be difficult to reach the dishes served on the round table. Square tables are not so common but will fit well in narrow dining areas or in a square dining space. The oval shaped tables can add a touch of elegance to your dining tables. These tables usually come with removable leaves making it a practical one as you can change the size of the table based on the number of people that you are expecting for dinner. You can also get a rectangular dining table with leaves that expand as per your need. If you are buying an extendable table go for the one with the timber joints than the ones with metal parts as these parts tend to rust with time.

Interior designers are coming up with innovative ideas that can save space and are functional. A large rectangular table can have some chairs and a bench on one or more sides so that the bench can be nicely tucked under the table when not in use.

Typically the height of the dining table is between 11 cms to 12 cms. It is better to measure the height of the table before buying it.  The chairs should not be more than 7 cms from the floor level if your table height is 12 cms. The height of the table plays a significant role in the comfort level. There are tables which are lower and if you decide to buy them pick the right seating that is suitable for that table otherwise eating a meal can become an uncomfortable affair. The width of most of the standard rectangular, square or oval tables is 14 cms. This gives you enough space for arranging the place settings and for the serving dishes too.

Along with the dimensions take into consideration the mood that you want to set in the room. Whether it is rustic, traditional or modern you can pick the right table based on your preference. If you want the dining table to be placed in an area that is an extension of the kitchen then you can go for a casual looking table while you need to pick the more ornate version if you want the table for the formal dining room.

Pick a dining table that blends both style and comfort to create a place where you can nurture your dreams and create cherish able memories with your loved ones.
