The Thonet No.18 stool is one of history’s first & most successful bentwood designs. First created in 1876 by Michael Thonet and his five sons, the Thonet No.18 stool has become one of the most enduringly popular bentwood designs. By trade a German cabinet maker, Thonet struck out on his own to create mass-produced, bentwood furniture designs. Thonet pioneered both mass production and bentwood design innovation creating innovative manufacturing processes that utilized steam to soften large pieces of wood making them malleable. Thonet’s primary bentwood designs were created with just a single piece of wood to form the stool’s back rest and back legs, an attached seat and the front legs were attached. Thonet was the creator of the original bentwood chair and designers far and wide borrowed from his vision. His No.18 stool is still widely viewed as the Viennese café stool and therefore is often referred to as the Vienna Café stool.
