Charles Eames was born in 1907, in St Louis, Missouri, and his university days saw him studying architecture at Washington University in St. Louis but he was soon dismissed from university because his views were regarded as 'too modern'. He later studied architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he subsequently taught and headed up the industrial design faculty.

It was in the 1950's that Charles and wife Catherine and daughter Lucia moved to California and it was there that the Eames expanded their modern design concepts and worked extensively with plywood and dabbled with fibreglass and wire mesh. What evolved were classics including the Dining Chair Wood, the Dining Chair Metal, the Lounge Chair of 1956 of which Relax House proudly carries, the Chaise, and so on.
