David Rowland’s iconic 40/4 stackable chair was our jumping off point. The 40/4 chair was designed in 1964 by American David Rowland and was the world's first stacking chair. Stacking chairs have become so eponymous that we can hardly imagine the FIRST stacking chair. Rowland didn’t have a preexisting market for this stacking chair, but he knew he had come up with something truly innovative. One reason we don’t always remember the 40/4 is because it has inspired so many copy cats and derivatives, that one has to go pretty far back to discover how this beautiful form came to be.

The 40/4 turned the furniture world upside down. It was an entirely new thing to be able to fill a room with seats, and then later, just as easily stack them up and leave the room open for something else. This chair opened up space for other things and bigger gatherings in spaces alternately used in different ways.
