In Harry Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work in his sculptural art, and these chairs were an extension of that work. Bertoia, having the artistic freedom to work on whatever fancied him and without the confines so many other designers faced, created the Bertoia Seating Collection(1952).
With his collection of iconic seating transformed from industrial wire rods, Harry Bertoia created an entirely new furniture form.
