Hans Wegner (Denmark 1914-2007)
“We must take care that everything does not get so dreadfully serious. We must play but we must play seriously”
Hans J. Wegner was the unquestionable king of Danish chair design. Wegner was one of the Danish furniture designers whose elegant but comfortable creations made Danish Modern all the rage in the ’50s and ’60s. Standing among the likes of Arne Jacobsen, PoulKjærholm and Verner Panton as titans of 20th-century Danish Modernism, Wegner was key in helping mould what would become the lasting Danish furniture aesthetic. Wegner was pivotal in developing a body of work known as organic functionalism, functional pieces that take their form from how something is actually used. Wegner, like many of the famous Danes sought beauty in an unfussy esthetic.
Wegner was most well-known for his gracefully tapered and curved solid wood chairs. The introduction of Wegner’s Peacock chair (1947) was the point that his design career really took off and he was never without work after that. His work in high demand, Wegner strove to produce at least one new chair each year. By the time his career was over, he had produced over 200 chairs all together. Chairs were not the only memorable thing he created but they are certainly Hans Wegner’s legacy. Chairs like the Wishbone Chair and the Round Arm Chair are some of Wegner’s most iconic, lasting and respected designs. “He was one of what I think of as the humble giants of 20th-century design, those men who would probably shun the term designer and prefer to call themselves cabinetmakers,” said Paola Antonelli, the curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
